CS2C Photo Editing Project

See the Photo Editing in Photoshop tutorial for an overview of features required for this assignment.

Create a dramatic Before/After photo edit that selectively incorporates adjustments, filters, and photo restoration or retouching techniques to radically change your photo. This is not the time to be subtle! DO NOT cut and paste elements from other photos into one composite image. We will do that in a future assignment. The current assignment is set to challenge you to modify ONE photo using selective adjustments, filtering, and retouching. Feel free to experiment a lot, but only turn in your best, most compelling work through Coursework. (You can certainly use the techniques more subtly to improve your personal photos, but that's not what this assignment is about.) Want to take your editing to the next level? Check out websites like 50 Truly Useful Photoshop Tutorials for even more techniques and recipes to try out.

Assignment grading criteria

  • Submit edited images that use a combination of filters and adjustments.
  • At least some of the effects must be selectively applied through the use of Layer Masks as discussed in the Adjustment Layers and Filters sections of the tutorial.
  • The document content must be at least of resolution 1024x768 or higher.
  • Layers are intelligently named to reflect what effect they have.
  • Image is cropped to follow the Rule of Thirds and other composition tips as as discussed in the I've Been Framed training video. (Sometimes it's appropriate to break the rules, but to demonstrate your understanding of the rule, please choose images and crops that can adhere to the rule for this assignment.)
  • Photoshop files NOT flattened and show work. The bottom layer should be the original image, even if it is a hidden layer.
  • Originality and respect of copyrights. (Spoofs are great, but final work must still be original.) All photos that you do not own are cited.
  • Apparent effort.
  • Included all original source and reference media.
