EDITING VIDEO FOR TEACHING AND PRESENTATION: LAPAROSCOPIC HUMAN SURGICAL PROCEDURES

Project Description

I wanted to use portions of video tapes recorded in the operating rooms in Stanford Hospital for presentation and teaching purposes. They were actual recordings of the laparoscopic urologic surgeries that I personally performed.

The Process

ATL consultants showed me how to use iMovie to digitize VHS tapes. First, I selected multiple segments of the VHS footage appropriate for my project and imported that material into iMovie. The next step was to edit the digitized segments, and export the result as movie clips.

The clips were made much shorter than the actual video tapes, which was desirable since the speaker is allotted only a small amount of time to deliver the message to the audience. In addition, the clips could be incorporated into PowerPoint presentation. Running video tapes that are several hours long is impractical and inconvenient.

The Outcome

The outcome of the project was excellent. The video clips were educational/instructional in nature and purpose. They were used to teach the surgical residents (people who finished med school yet still in training to become fully fledged surgeons) and the practicing surgeons on how certain laparoscopic surgical procedures can be performed. The teaching was conducted in intradepartmental conferences here at Stanford, national meetings such as American Urologic Association, and international meetings such as World Congress of Endoscopic/ Laparoscopic Urology and Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.

Lessons Learned

(1) First-hand experience in learning how to extract raw tape footage, edit the extracted segments, and create a new instructional digital movie. (2) Unique opportunity to interact with super-friendly ATL staff.

Future Projects at the ATL

Further experience with the use of iMovie and video editing.
